Women’s lacrosse wins MPSF Tournament, starts NCAA play Friday

Led by redshirt junior Hannah Hook, the University of Denver women’s lacrosse team defeated Stanford 14-11 in the MPSF Tournament Championship Sunday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on the DU campus. The Pioneers earn their first MPSF Tournament Championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. DU will make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, facing the Jacksonville Dolphins on Friday, May 9, in Gainesville, Fla. The winner of the first round game will face the fourth seeded Florida Gators.

“Familiar foes help us prepare for what’s to come,” said head coach Liza Kelly. “There should not be any surprises in our travel schedule or what we plan to do moving forward. Hopefully we get the chance to face both of the teams in our region.”

In Sunday’s game, three Pioneers registered hat tricks and senior Meredith Harris and sophomore Christa Reese earned four points each. Harris recorded three assists and a goal, while Reese finished with three goals and an assist.

“Having the tournament here on our home turf was huge for us,” Harris said. “It’s always great to beat Stanford, especially twice in a season which has not happened in the four years I’ve been here. It hasn’t set in that we’ve won the tournament yet, so we’re still in shock. It feels great knowing that we are in the tournament.”
