Journalism Ethics offers practical, step-by-step guidance for making ethical decisions and presents criteria for understanding moral and legal implications as well as matters of taste. The book presents 50 ethical challenges news organizations have faced and how they met them. The cases cover a range of topics including accuracy, deception, privacy, photojournalism and diversity. Useful as a classroom textbook and as a handbook for newsrooms facing ethical dilemmas, the new, fourth edition shows how news outlets have responded to ethical problems in their reporting. The book suggests questions, analyses and tools to frame solutions to ethical quandaries that confront today’s reporters. It also advises on new challenges like changing pre-publication review standards, photo manipulation and using social media as news sources. Fred Brown is an adjunct instructor in communication ethics at the University of Denver and a principal in a Denver-based media training and consulting firm. He is a former national president of the Society of Professional Journalists and former chair of its ethics committee.
