Lamont Featured Performance: “Chansons Tristes”

Richard Slavich will perform in a faculty recital called "Chansons Tristes" on Oct. 28.

Classical music lovers will be able to hear a duo of Lamont legends for a song.

Cellist Richard Slavich and pianist Theodor Lichtmann will present a distinctive faculty recital called “Chansons Tristes.” The recital’s theme is song and will feature Paul Hindemith’s Variations on an Old-English Nursery Song: A frog he went a-courting, Johannes Brahms’ Sonata in D Major, Opus 78, Benjamin Britten’s Third Suite for Cello, Opus 87, Manuel DeFalla’s Canciones Populares Españolas.

“Hindemith’s merry ‘A frog, he went a-courting’ is a set of variations on an old English nursery song,” Slavich says. “The third movement of the Brahms Sonata in D Major, Opus 78, takes its material from Brahms’ own ‘Rain Song.’  Britten’s third solo cello suite is based on Russian folk songs, and DeFalla’s Popular Songs are a cello-piano arrangement of his original set for voice and piano.”

Slavich is chair of the string department at DU’s Lamont School of Music, where he directs the cello and chamber music programs. Each year, Slavich offers a 10-week seminar on combating stage fright. Slavich has performed a solo recital every year of his 35 years of service at the University of Denver.

Until his retirement in 2007, Theodor Lichtmann was professor at Lamont and chair of the piano division. Lichtmann appeared frequently as soloist and as partner with his colleagues throughout his tenure at DU.

The recital will start at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. A reception will follow in the Spencer Room. Tickets are $21 for adults and $19 for seniors. Admission is free for all students from any school with an ID and all Pioneer Card holders. Parking is free.
