Lamont Featured Performance: MIJI Percussion Duo

Ji Hye Jung will perform as part of the MIJI Percussion Duo at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts on Nov. 1.

The MIJI Percussion Duo is sure to drum up a lot of great music during its stop at DU.

The duo, which consists of Ji Hye Jung and Michael Zell, will play a wide variety of music, ranging from arrangements of Franz Schubert to Thierry De Mey as well as a number of original works for percussion by John Fitz Rogers, Alejandro Viñao, David Lang, Yasuo Sueyoshi and Jason Treuting.

Jung is an assistant professor of percussion at the University of Kansas and lecturer in percussion at Cleveland State University. Michael Zell, a former principal timpanist with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, spent 2010–11 as the percussionist for Ensemble ACJW, the performing ensemble of Carnegie Hall’s young artist program. Both are graduates from the Peabody Conservatory and the Yale School of Music.

“Ji Hye and Michael are cutting-edge performers in the world of percussion around the world,” says John Kinzie, DU’s director of percussion studies. “Their performance will be intriguing, diverse and an outstanding presentation of modern day percussion playing. This is a great opportunity to hear music beyond your imagination.”

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 in Hamilton Recital Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. A reception will follow in the Spencer Room. Tickets are $21 for adults and $19 for seniors. Admission is free for all students from any school with an ID and all Pioneer Card holders. Parking is free. Tickets are available at the Newman Center Box Office at 303-871-7720 or www.newmantix.com
