Sporting Event of the Week: DU vs. Alabama-Huntsville in hockey

The University of Denver men’s ice hockey team faces off against the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers at 7:37 p.m. Jan. 6 at Magness Arena in the final nonconference series before the Pioneers start seven straight weekends of WCHA action.

Chargers’ head coach Chris Luongo played at Michigan State from 1985–89 while Denver head coach George Gwozdecky was an assistant coach for the Spartans. Alabama-Huntsville assistant coach Gavin Morgan played for Gwozdecky and the Pioneers from 1995–99.

Denver is 10-7-3 through its first 20 games and looks for its first three-game winning streak on Friday night. DU is led by junior co-captain Drew Shore, who shares the WCHA scoring lead with 29 points on 12 goals and 17 assists.

DU freshman Juho Olkinuora has surprised in goal with a 5-5-2 record, 2.20 goals against average and .925 save percentage. Olkinuora has led Denver to four wins in its last six games.

DU is 4-0 all-time against the Chargers dating back to 2000–01. The Pioneers have outscored the Chargers 21-2 in the all-time series.
