The University of Denver men’s ice hockey team faces off against the Miami University RedHawks at 7:07 p.m. Nov. 26 at DU’s Magness Arena in the second day of the Denver Cup Classic.

DU Head Coach George Gwozdecky is coaching his 1,000th career game as a collegiate coach. Gwozdecky served as head coach of the RedHawks from 1989–94 prior to coming to Denver. During Gwozdecky’s stint at Miami, the RedHawks went 83-94-19 and captured their first conference title and NCAA tournament appearance in 1992–93. DU Associate Head Coach Steve Miller served as Gwozdecky’s assistant coach for the RedHawks from 1991–94.

Current Miami Head Coach Enrico Blasi played at Miami under Gwozdecky from 1990–94, captaining the team as a senior. Blasi then served in two coaching roles at Denver, first as a graduate assistant coach in 1995–96 and then as an assistant coach from 1996–99 before returning to Miami as head coach.

DU is 4-3-0 all-time against the RedHawks dating back to 1986–87. Most recently, the RedHawks defeated the Pioneers 4-2 on March 27, 2009, in the NCAA Tournament’s first round. The Pioneers also hosted the RedHawks in the Denver Cup Classic in both 1997 and 2002.

The Pioneers are 5-3-3 (4-2-3 WCHA) coming into the weekend. Junior co-captain Drew Shore leads DU in scoring with 16 points and is tied for a league-leading 11 assists. Sophomore Jason Zucker is second on the team in scoring with 15 points. Freshman Joey LaLeggia leads WCHA rookie defenseman with 10 points. Sophomore Beau Bennett has two goals and seven assists on a five-game point streak.
