The University of Denver is being recognized with dual proclamations from Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock that declare Oct. 22, 2011, “University of Denver Pioneer Athletics Day.”

The proclamations recognize DU’s fourth-consecutive Learfield Sports I-AAA Directors Cup, which is awarded annually to the highest achieving non-football athletics program in NCAA Division I.

Denver men’s ice hockey opens Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) action against Minnesota State in their first home series of the season at 7:37 p.m. Oct. 21 and 7:07 p.m. Oct. 22. Prior to the Oct. 22 game at Magness Arena, the Pioneers will unveil a new Directors Cup banner and host a special ceremonial puck drop.

DU is 24-13-6 (.628) all-time against the Mavericks and is unbeaten at 10-0-2 in the last 12 contests between the two teams, dating back to 2008–09. Most recently, the Pioneers swept the Mavericks at Magness Arena to kick off the 2011 WCHA playoffs.

DU junior Drew Shore of Denver leads the Pioneers with two goals this season while 2010–11 WHCA rookie of the year Jason Zucker, a sophomore from Las Vegas, leads DU with three points on one goal and two assists. The Pioneers are 1-1 on the season, with a season opening 4-2 win at Boston College on the road followed by a 4-3 loss at Boston University last weekend.

Tickets for Denver vs. Minnesota State are still available. Visit www.DenverPioneers.com for ticket information and comprehensive coverage of DU hockey and DU athletics.
