Denver Broncos play at DU

Today we take the National Football League’s AFC and NFC conferences for granted, but there was a time when the long-established NFL and the upstart American Football league absolutely hated each other. In 1970 the two leagues would merge, but prior to that, several pre-season games were held to spark fan interest. The first ever of these was held at the old DU stadium on Aug. 5, 1967, between the Denver Broncos and the heavily favored Detroit Lions. Before 21,288 crazed fans, the Broncos pulled off a huge upset, winning the game 13-7. Football historians today mark the date as the beginning of recognition for the fledgling AFL.
