Former English professor’s influential novel celebrates 50th anniversary

Initially, the book sold barely 2,000 copies. But, through a series of reviews in publications ranging from The New Yorker to Time and The Guardian, “Stoner” found new fans and emerged as a cult classic, leading to rereleases and additional printings domestically and internationally. On Nov. 3, New York Review Books released a special 50th-anniversary hardback edition, complete with previously unpublished correspondence between Williams and his agent about the book’s writing and publication

Law school’s strategic plan targets the student experience

“When I became interim dean in 2009, I thought it would be good if everyone was on the same page. And if that page was heavily informed by high-quality data and feedback from our stakeholders, all the better,” Katz says. “A lot of people at that time talked about the importance of a dean’s vision. But to me, it seemed silly to talk about a vision if that vision wasn’t in line with the goals and aspirations of the key stakeholders — particularly the faculty, who are the people who get things done at a law school.”

Dubbed Project X-ITE, the initiative looks to position DU as a global leader in entrepreneurship-related higher education, and to increase the University’s visibility in Denver’s startup scene. You may have received — as has the Office of International Education — some inquiries from students and parents regarding the continuation of study-abroad programs for fall 2015. At this time there are no plans to bring DU students home early. There also are no plans to cancel faculty-led courses to Europe scheduled for later this month.

Men’s soccer takes Summit League title, hosts first-ever NCAA Tournament home game Sunday

The top-seeded University of Denver men’s soccer team won its third straight Summit League Championship Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Oral Roberts at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. The Pioneers have earned the No. 13 seed in the 2015 NCAA Tournament and will play the winner of SMU and Utah Valley on Sunday in Denver in the first NCAA Tournament home game in program history.

Since January 2014, Caley Shoemaker (BFA ’09) has been head distiller at California-based Hangar 1 Vodka, headquartered at an old airplane shelter at the Alameda Naval Air Station near San Francisco. She’s one of the few female distillers in the country, and she’s making a name for herself — and her product — in the Bay Area’s bustling artisanal beverage and cocktail scene.

Momentum Scholarship Challenge aims to build financial support for undergraduates

As a result of conversations with the University community and alumni about the growing need for scholarship funding, Chancellor Rebecca Chopp launched the Momentum Scholarship Challenge earlier this year. The scholarship matching program will endow $45 million in new scholarship funding by 2018 in an effort to eliminate the need gap for undergraduate students — the average of $6,500 a student is unable to pay even after receiving aid.
